Guild Edition - How The Grinch Stole Christmas (1957)

How The Grinch Stole Christmas; written & illustrated by Dr. Seuss; Random House; 1957

Junior Literary Guild Edition - somewhat rare (not seen by Younger/Hirsch).  Value is difficult to determine, being perhaps a book club edition, however unsure as to distribution, since the front and back endpapers are almost like a mock-up (with the words 'FRONT' and 'BACK').  Perplexing issue.

Front boards green cloth, with title and Grinch image in white embossing.

Dr. Seuss First Edition

Back boards green cloth; back DJ has emblem for Junior Literary Guild.

Dr. Seuss First Edition

Front free endpaper with "How The Grinch Stole Christmas", followed by "FRONT".

Back free endpaper with "How The Grinch Stole Christmas", followed by "BACK"

How The Grinch Stole Christmas First Edition

Front DJ flap with "BOOK CLUB EDITION" at bottom right.

Back DJ flap with picture of Dr. Seuss at top, then "PRINTED IN THE U.S.A." at the bottom.

Newbery Award Books, with Illustrations

Created a web page of the eighty-one Newbery award winning books with cover art or pictures from one of the illustrators covered in the Children's Picturebook Price Guide.  To our knowledge, this is the first time such a cross-list has been published.  See table at:

Newbery Awards With Illustrations

The table is a chronological listing, covering both Newbery Medal and Honor books. Would be happy to hear of Newbery books we might have missed, or any comments on book values.

Regards,
Stan.

First Edition Identification Points - Link Page

Created an index page to the first edition identification points on this blog:

First Edition Identification Points

The index page is more convenient to use then wading through the listings on the blog, and especially as we post more books.  The index page will lag the blog posts a bit, however I will try to keep it fairly up-to-date.

Would enjoy hearing your comments if you find the index or posts useful.

Stan Zielinski

Dr. Seuss - Redbook Magazine Original Stories

Seuss Redbook I've documented 23 issues of Redbook Magazine from the 1950's which contain Dr. Seuss stories. Each of these were original stories (except Grinch?), not reprints like the Seuss stories in Children's Digest, and therefore likely have collectible value. At this time, these issues are relatively inexpensive to acquire.

No. Pgs  Date     Title
01   4    1950 - Jun    Gustav the Goldfish
02   3    1950 - Jul    If I Ran The Zoo
03   3    1950 - Aug    Tad and Todd
04   2    1950 - Sep    Marco Comes Late

07   2    1950 - Dec    The Big Brag
08   2    1951 - Jan    Horton and the Kwuggerbug
09   2    1951 - Feb    The Rabbit, the Bear and the Zinniga-Zanniga

23  12   1957 - Dec    How the Grinch Stole Christmas

regards,
Stan Zielinski
1stedition.net

Seuss Redbook Notes:

1. The July 1950 issue with If I Ran The Zoo pre-dates the publication of the book by several months. Notably, the book has text which differs from the original Redbook version.

2. The April 1951 issue with Yertle pre-dates the publication of the book by seven years. Yertle The Turtle (Random, 1958) also includes the Gertrude McFuzz story, which was published in the July 1951 Redbook, and The Big Brag, which was originally published in the December 1950 Redbook.

3. The December 1957 issue contains the complete story of How The Grinch Stole Christmas. This is odd, since the book was published that same season. I've researched whether Seuss's original intention was to publish Grinch in Redbook first (perhaps the quality of the story convinced Bennett Cerf to publish the book version?), and found the following:

From Ruth MacDonald's "Dr. Seuss", "At the same time he was working on The Cat In The Hat, Seuss was expected to produce an annual volume for Random House. One year, he found himself with a deadline but no book for the publisher's Christmas list. The Grinch and his story occurred fortuitously, and the story was written quickly, in a few weeks"

This is contrary to the account in the Morgan's biography "Dr. Seuss & Mr. Geisel", "In mid-May, Helen wrote Louise Bonino that the Grinch was in the mail, and that she expected it to be the second Dr.Seuss blockbuster of 1957.[...] The Grinch appeared in the fall of 1957 and was acclaimed from the start."

eBay Search - Caldecott Illustrators

We have about 60 eBay searches saved which we execute twice per week, and another 40 that we execute once per week. 'Search title and description' is ticked on all searches, and most of them are performed at the 'Book' category level.  The gist of the more frequent searches is something like the following:

(seuss,suess) (dj,dustjacket,dust,jacket,dustwrapper,wrapper)
http://tinyurl.com/fymyq

I don't use key words "first printing" or "first edition", since there is a lot of misuse of such on eBay.

Another example is
"lois lenski" (dj,dustjacket,dust,jacket,dustwrapper,wrapper)
http://tinyurl.com/znxuq

If you would like to use some saved searches of prominent children’s book illustrators, then go to http://1stedition.net/caldecottmedal.html.  Each of the Caldecott winning illustrator is a hot link to a saved eBay search.

I've executed these saved searches for seven years.

Collecting Experience

We've been asked several times for our background regarding the legitimacy of the first edition identification points for books posted on this blog. We can't speak from authority, only experience. So, some background info.

In all cases we own the first edition book we are posting. The photographs on the blog are from books we own.

Our collection includes 4,000 first edition children's books, covering the period from around 1914 to 2006. We have never sold a picturebook. Close to 1,000 books were purchased from ABAA members (or from booksellers who choose to leave the ABAA). A prominent number of books were purchased from Aleph-Bet, Jo Ann Reisler, Maggie Page, Peter Glassman (Books of Wonder), Jeryl Metz, and Elaine Woodford.

Our collection focuses on Caldecott Medal and Honor books and their illustrators, Seuss books, along with other contemporary illustrators we enjoy, such as Steven Kellogg, Michael Hague, Leslie Tryon, and Lynn Munsinger. We also love the books from the early 1930's, the years in which the picturebook form was solidifying.

We research our purchases, and when in doubt, validate first edition points from another reputable source prior to purchasing the book. We retain the mailing catalogs and pamphlets from each of the booksellers to use as reference material. We have a fairly extensive collection of the Horn Book Magazine from 1936 through 1970, which is a fantastic reference, especially for original book prices.

We have been in communication for 6 or 7 years with the prominent eBay children's book buyers/sellers, including Cliff Erickson (To & Again Books) and Bruce Howard (Bookbid Books). Cliff is one of the most knowledgeable children's booksellers around--remarkably he was given an acknowledgment for his contribution in both the Santi LGB guide and the Younger/Hirsch Seuss Guide. I am hoping Cliff will document first edition points for Harper's "I Can Read' books, which are extremely under documented in collector circles. I'm pretty sure Bruce has the largest collection of Seuss books in the world (i.e. multiple complete 1st edition sets). I recall when the stickered version of Green Eggs first came up for sale (several years before the Younger/Hirsch guide), and a bunch of us were emailing back and forth the excitement of discovering a new first state of the book. We had similar thoughts with McElligot's Pool, with the discovery of the rear flap triangle with the $2.50 price.

My obsessions - Seuss, Beginner Books, Platt & Munk's "Never Grow Old" series, info related to the picturebook history (original artwork from books, magazine appearances, early merchandising, etc...), and finding undocumented 'states'. As an example, we have 38 copies of the first three states of The Cat In The Hat (there are actually four states within what is commonly known as three first states). Documented the Seuss original stories in Redbook Magazine (I believe the first time they have been collectively documented). We have over 20 copies of the Lois Lenski version of The Little Engine That Could, part of the "Never Grow Old" series; documented 14 states in this issue, published with DJ from 1930-1952, up until the lawsuit with Grosset & Dunlap. Excluding Cat/Hat, we have nearly 200 copies of the first fifty Beginner Books in DJ, to assist in documenting first edition points. Found two states of Millions of Cats with Jersey City imprint, which I believe has not yet been documented. Etc...

Yertle The Turtle (1958) - Price Guide Correction

Yertle The Turtle And Other Stories; written and illustrated by Theodor Seuss Geisel; Random House; 1958

Children's Picturebook Price Guide Value:  $220 VG+

Essential identifying point

Page 54, Children’s Picture Price Guide is incorrect, as follows:

“The back dust jacket has 13 photos of previous Seuss books.”

Should read, as follows:

“The back dust jacket has 14 photos of previous Seuss books.”

Additional information

The Yertle story first appeared in the April 1951 issue of Redbook Magazine, which pre-dates the publication of the book by seven years.

Yertle The Turtle And Other Stories (Random, 1958) also includes the Gertrude McFuzz story, which was published in the July 1951 Redbook, and The Big Brag, which was originally published in the December 1950 Redbook. The copyright page in the book makes note of these earlier publications, as follows.

“Copyright 1950, 1951, 1958 by Dr. Seuss”

At this time, all three of the Redbook Magazines are relatively affordable.

The Collectible Book Market

Since the early 1990’s, the collective independent book store population has undergone a significant upheaval, through the advent of the large chains, then followed by the emergence of Amazon and the internet. Still, the financially strong have survived and reached a symbiotic balance between themselves, Amazon, and the Barnes and Nobles of the world. The secondary book market has not faired as well.

The secondary market is composed of three primary avenues, being overrun books (i.e. discounted new books), used books, and antiquarian or collectible books. Whereas the primary market for new books has three established outlets for sales, being chain stores, independent book stores, and the internet store, the secondary market is in turmoil as all three threads compete in the same marketplaces. As a result, at this time, the collectible book market is quite unstable.

There is no firmly established marketplace for overrun books, used books, or collectible books on the internet. Instead, each competes for space in the same market places. The three main markets are the specialized internet listing entities, such as ABE, the auction entities, primarily eBay, and the subsidiary services, such as Half.com and Amazon. In the case of all three, there are significant issues to overcome for the collectible bookseller and book buyer.

The crux of the issue is that the prospective buyer for overrun books, used books, and collectible books is a very different consumer, and yet all three consumer groups are searching in the same markets. Because of this, the three market places are orienting more and more toward the largest consumer class. The collectible market, being the smallest of the three, is being shoved aside as the market places adjust and orient toward the overrun and used book markets.

The collectible comic book market and sports card market do not experience this same issue. There is really no significant used comic book or used sports card market; the collectible markets dominate and eBay is the defacto market maker, providing liquidity for the professional seller and the collector.

Where is this leading? I’m not smart enough to figure it out. It is going to be difficult to establish a ‘collectibles only’ book market. The collectible book industry is too fragmented to speak in ten voices, much less one. Something akin to the eBay model is probably preferential, with its low barrier to entry, transparency, and liquidity, and would need some modifications to properly service the collectible book market (longer auction durations, painless reserves, etc…). The problem is that eBay is dominated by the used and overrun seller and buyer.

Does anybody have any viable solutions?

The Giving Tree (1964)

First Edition Identification

The Giving Tree, written & illustrated by Shel Silverstein; Harper & Row, 1964

Children's Picturebook Price Guide Value: $780 VG+

The Giving Tree, first published in 1964, is a children's book written and illustrated by Shel Silverstein. The story is a short moral tale about a relationship between a young boy and a tree in a forest. It tells the account of how the tree loves the boy, and helps the boy with his needs throughout his life, from the boy's childhood until his golden years (See GottaBook's Oddaptations for a synopsis). This book has become one of Silverstein's best known titles and has been translated into more than 30 languages.

Since The Giving Tree was published, it has generated controversy and opposing opinions for its interpreted messages, on whether the tree is selfless or merely self-sacrificing, and whether the boy is selfish or reasonable in his demands of the tree.

Essential identifying point - DJ

Copies of The Giving Tree for sale are often incorrectly identfied as first editions. The true first printing is difficult to find, and does not surface regularly for sale. To set the record straight:

Dust jacket flap:  Price “$2.50”.

Note: The DJ price is essential, since we've come across editions with all first edition points on book and DJ, except price is "$3.95".

<

Back DJ flap:

Three reviews of Lafcadio, by NY Times, Kirkus, Publisher’s Weekly.

Back DJ cover:

Full torso picture of Shel Silverstein, with hair, covering top left half of back dj. Early printings have larger photo, again with hair. Later printings have a bald Silverstein photo covering entire back dj cover.

Seuss Books

In some cases, my research on first edition identification points for Dr. Seuss books differs from that found in the Younger/Hirsch book. Younger/Hirsch describes each book in great detail, and includes images, then concludes the passage on each book with a paragraph “FIRST PRINTING POINTS”, followed by the requisite information for the particular books identification.

The following is a list in which the Younger/Hirsch “FIRST PRINTING POINTS” indicates the book’s price on the DJ flap is a requirement for first edition identification, where my research indicates the price is not essential (the number is the Y/H index item for the book). As an example, for the Sleep Book, from Younger/Hirsch. "FIRST PRINTING POINTS: Correct ads on rear dw as listed above and 295/295 price".

20. Sleep Book (1968):  295/295 - price not necessary

21. Eye Book (1968):  195/195 – price not necessary

23. Foot Book (1968):  195/195 – price not necessary

30. Hop On Pop (1963):  195/195 – price not necessary

41. I Had Trouble In Getting To Solla Sollew (1965):  295/295 - price not necessary

42. I Wish I Had Duck Feet (1965):  195/195 – price not necessary

43. If I Ran The Circus (1956): 2 50/250 – price not necessary

45. In A People House (1972):  $2.50 – price not necessary

51. Marvin K. Mooney Will You Please Go Now (1972):  $2.50 – price not necessary

56. Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You? (1970):  $1.95 – price not necessary

72. Shape Of Me And Other Stuff (1972):  $2.50 – price not necessay

73. The Sneetches (1961):  295/295 - price not necessary

In all of the above books, my research is in agreement with the other identification points for the particular book, as follows.

The dust jackets are unique to the first printing (either back graphic or back flap) on books 20, 21, 23, 30, 41, 42, 56, and 73.

Regarding books 45, 51, and 72, Beginner Books changed their price from $1.95 to $2.50 in 1971/1972. They quit issuing dust jackets in 1973, therefore the books published in 1972 were only issued with the $2.50 price on dust jacket.

[Note: Cliff Erickson of To & Again Books indicates that there is an issue of Marvin K. Mooney with no price on the dust jacket. This issue is not documented in Younger/Hirsch, and is scarcer than the issue with the $2.50 price.]

The first edition of If I Ran The Circus was the only printing with the pink boards and pink jacket. The second state book has the red colored cover which graces the book being sold in book stores today, and the price was raised to 295/295.

A Fun Fact

Page 13:  After he was awarded the Caldecott Medal, Petit wrote Gerstein a detailed letter praising the book, with one teeny, tiny, correction, being the size of the cable. In first an early printings the cable was "five-eighths" inch thick; in later printings, “five-eighths” was changed to “seven-eighths” in the following line

"To his end of the stronger line, Philippe tied the cable on which he would walk. It was five-eighths of an inch thick."
