Newbery Award Books, With Illustrations

xx

Within the book collecting hobby, in general, the first edition Newbery Medal books have higher collector interest than the Caldecott Medal books. This is especially evident over the past thirty years, where market values of first edition Newbery books have increased dramatically.

The Newbery winners as a whole, being chapter books, have not been included in the Children's Picturebook Price Guide. However, many of the Newbery books include artwork by illustrators covered by the Price Guide, so for the sake of biblographic completeness, the books have been included in the artist's titles.

The Newbery has been awarded by the American Library Association since 1922:

The Newbery Medal was named for eighteenth-century British bookseller John Newbery. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.

Newbery Award Books, With Illustrations!

We've documented eighty-one Newbery books with pictures and/or cover art by illustrators listed in the Price Guide. Twenty-eight of the books won the Newbery Medal. Twenty-four of the books were both written and illustrated by a single individual, including Robert Lawson and Wanda Gag.

A Visit To William Blake's Inn is the only book to win both a Newbery and Caldecott award. In 1982, Nancy Willard was awarded the Newbery Medal for the story, while Alice and Martin Provenson won a Caldecott Honor for the illustrations.

Two of Wanda Gág's picturebooks, Millions Of Cats (1929) and ABC Bunny (1933), along with another picturebook, Honk The Moose (1936), won Newbery Honor awards in the years prior to the inception of the Caldecott awards. The only other picturebook to win a Newbery awards for writing was William Steig's Dr. DeSoto (1982).

Caldecott Medal winner Maurice Sendak's artwork can be found in six of the Newbery books.

The table lists values for first edition books, with dust jackets!
