Dr. Seuss First Edition Books

Beginner Book Dust Jacket Back 'C' shows all seven books that were being published im 1959 for the Beginner Book franchise. It is uncommon to find copies of B-01 The Cat In The Hat with this back DJ.

Notice the variety of 'Beginner Book' logos used across the 7 books pictured - several of these logos were not actually used on the books. For example:

  • The logo on Sam And The Firefly is the 'FOR BEGINNING READERS' logo used on The Cat In The Hat , when the actual logo used in the published book is that pictured on The Big Jump.
  • The logo on A Fly Went By was never used on any Beginner Book.
  • The cover design for A Fly Went By is dramatically different than that pictured

These inconsistencies can be attributed to Beginner Books 'growing pains'. The publisher remains 'BEGINNER BOOKS', since in 1959 it was still a separate publishing entity and not yet owned by Random House.

See Beginner Books Dust Jacket Backs to see the publishing sequence of dust jackets from 1957-to-1967. This is the primary resource to identify the year of publication if you own a later edition Beginner Book.

See Beginner Book Covers for first edition identification of the first 50 Beginner Books.
